About North Portland Neighborhoods
North Portland has done a complete about face in the past 5-10 years. It used to be run down, full of rentals and uncared for homes- lots of crime and violence- and gangs. Then people began rediscovering the city- buying the old neglected homes and fixing them up..slowly but surely the neighborhood began to revive. Then the city of Portland decided to spend some money doing major urban renewal. They lent out money for remodels of single family residences, rental units and even commercial and business properties. The renewal escalated! Soon the Max came to North Portland - and with it cute little cafes and restaurants and shops! And people - who wanted to commute to the city on the train! So more and more people moved into N Portland , fixing up the old houses, and building new ones. Now N Portland is vibrant, full of life and sizzling hot! Look below to learn more about some of the neighborhoods in North Portland.

Arbor Lodge Arbor Lodge is a quaint little Portland neighborhood with lots to offer. It is 5 minutes to downtown, has a Max stop and close to I-5 for easy access anywhere. It borders popular neighborhoods like University Park , Humbolt , Alberta , Piedmont, Boise and Eliot. The growth and appreciation in Arbor Lodge has gone crazy in the last few years.

Mississippi-Boise/Eliot Mississippi is the common name that Portlanders use for this neighborhood- but Boise is the official name, spilling north into Humboldt and south a little bit into Elliot. East Columbia can be either really bad if you are talking about the slum area down by Gertz Circle- or can be beautiful if you are talking about being on the river or in the surrounding farmland or the brand new high class neighborhoods springing up.. Or it can be in-between when you are in Mariners Loop area- pretty houses all squished together with tiny yards- all out there by themselves- really close to the river! I think this area will continue to grow and spread- there is a long trail that goes along the Columbia that is really fun to ride bikes on- it goes and goes and goes- and you can stop at little beaches on the way and lay in the sun. It's a great area to live close to if you like the water.
East Columbia Schools:

Middle school: Tubman(8)
High school: Jefferson Campus (9-12)

Hayden Island is right to the north of Portland and spans the area under the I-5 bridge that goes over the river. It has alot condos that either have a view of the Columbia River or are on it- plus alot of houseboats. There are also lots of hotels and commercial in the middle of Hayden Island- in fact Jantzen Beach is right in the middle of it and the bridge over the Columbia to Washington State goes right over the middle of it. It gets alot of noise from both the freeway and the airport- but the veiws can be spectacular- especially if you like birds and wildlife! I had one client that lived in a houseboat right on the river and watched some baby osprey grow up and finally take off from a nest high on a pole. It was awesome!

Kenton The borders are Chautauqua Blvd and I-5, north to south between the Columbia River and Lombard. It's pretty far north, and wasn't a very good neighborhood before the Max came in. But since then, it has exploded. The little houses everywhere are getting fixed up, shops and cafes are coming in and Kenton Park is coming back into it's own. As you drive up Interstate and come towards Denver, Interstate crosses the Max Tracks at Columbia- this is Kenton! You can see all the new little shopping areas coming in-and the Max stop is right there! Keep going on Denver- make your first right and at the end of the street you will see Kenton Park!

Overlook Overlook is bordered by the Willamette River on the SW, the Freemont Bridge to the South, I-5 to the east, and Ainsworth and Willamette Blvd. to the North. It is just minutes to downtown by car or bike or hop right on the MAX. As you are going out along busy, bustling Killingsworth ST- headed from I-5- suddenly you are hit with absolutely breathtaking views of downtown across the river, Forest Park and the West Hills. As you curve around you see the arched bridges of Portland silhouetted by downtown. You are in the center of Overlook!

Piedmont is bordered on the west by I-5, east by MLK, north by Columbia Blvd and to the south by N Ainsworth. It is a neighborhood in transition- pretty far north- but getting a rebirth and rebuilding because of the Max- which is just a couple of blocks from it's west border. There are alot of cool old homes in this neighborhood, especially around Ainsworth.

Portsmouth is north of Lombard, south of Columbia Blvd, east of St Johns Ave and west of Chautaqua. It is a neighborhood in transition. South of Lombard, the houses and neighborhoods are pretty high class...

St John's used to be a high class beautiful area when it first came into being. The St John's Bridge is one of the prettiest bridges I've seen- and will take you from St John's over the Willamette and into NW Portland within 5 minutes! It is situated at the tip of the west peninsula going from NE Portland west- and it is surrounded on 3 sides by river- most of it industrial- and then by the neighborhoods of Kenton, Cathedral Park, and Portsmouth. It is coming back slowly but surely-

University Park Borders against Overlook and Cathedral Park- and it has the University of Portland right in it's midst. It is a beautiful old neighborhood- full of stately old homes being restored and reborn. People here love to walk and ride there bikes- and the University grounds add alot of beauty to the area.
