About North East Portland Neighborhoods
Portland is divided into north and south at Burnside- and east and west at the Willamette River. So NE Portland goes from the Willamette River east all the way to Gresham, and from Winning Way at the Rose Quarter north to Rail tracks just before Columbia Blvd a 1/2 block Section of Williams ave on the Columbia River. Alemeda district has some of the most gorgeous homes in Portland- built in the 20's and 30's- leaded glass windows, hardwood floors, tree lined streets. The Buckman neighborhood is bordered by the Willamette River, Kerns, Sunnyside, and Hosford-Abernathy neighborhoods and it's boundaries are the Willamette River to the west, Burnside to the north, Hawthorne to the south, and SE 28th to the east. The beginning of the Hawthorne District is located partially in Buckman. Concordia has really come up these past few years. It has a lot of cool old houses- English, Bungalows, Old PDX and other interesting styles. If you have heard of Alberta Arts- a newer neighborhood not even on most maps- this area is included in Concordia. There are new restaurants, funky shops, art galleries and lots of historic homes- some already restored, others being restored and a lot still needing restoration! Kerns runs from the Willamette River to NE 32nd and from E Burnside up to I-84. It is a neighborhood in transition- they have a lot of plans for the industrial area that is close to the Willamette River-so it has some urban renewal aspects to it. The farther away from the river you get, the better the area- as you get farther east there are some cool old houses and cute little neighborhoods. It's bordered by Buckman to the south, Sullivan's Gulch and Lloyd to the north and Laurelhurst to the east. It has good public transportation access, and is close to shopping etc-although you have to maneuver around I-84 to get up to Lloyd Center and Broadway. The Hawthorne District runs along Hawthorne- mostly south of it - from about 28 th to 44 th . It is not a designated neighborhood- but is one of the most popular areas of Portland . It is technically part of the Richmond neighborhood. The Hawthorne area is just packed with trendy shops, restaurants, cafes, book stores, art galleries, massage, tattoo, acupuncture and other alternative treatments and other cool things- some really unique and creative, others outlandish . It's a good place to live if you travel a lot, because it is close to the airport. If you like boating and fishing and just being by water- it's a good area too, because it is close to the Columbia River . Borders the Columbia River to the north, 122 nd to the east, Broadway to the south and 82 nd to the east. It has a lot of ranch homes with hardwood floors and fireplaces- sometimes a fireplace in the basement too- usually big yards- and houses are mostly built in the 50's, 60's. Roseway begins around NE 60th - not too far out of Hollywood- Sandy Blvd cuts diagaonally through it. It has alot of bungalows with character- hardwoods, built-ins, fireplaces etc. It is a good family neighborhood- close enough in that you can take the bus into town- especially with Sandy running the buses right through the middle of it. It's a good, solid famly neighborhood- and will continue coming up in price as the houess are fixed up. | ||||||||

| Sullivan's Gulch | |||||||||

Sullivan's Gulch is between Broadway and I-84, and NE 16 th to NE 33 rd . It is close to Lloyd Center , walking distance to the Max, and really close to downtown. You can ride your bike or walk across the Broadway Bridge and be in NW Portland in minutes. It's a mixture of cool old houses and a lot of condo conversions- most made from cool older buildings with hardwood floors and character. It's a good place to live if you want to be able to walk or ride your bike everywhere or take public transit- and the shopping and restaurants nearby are awesome. |
